Parents:

As we enter our last grading period, we still have many goals in the 8th grade. Our achievement testing begins next week. Please make sure your child is well rested and has a good breakfast.  These tests are very important to measure your child's abilities and to make sure he/she is placed in the right classes for high school.

On the lines of high school, many of your children are registered at their high school. We have completed Limestone, Manual and will soon finish Central and Woodruff. Some of you have requested that we don't register your child which is fine;however please remember to do so as soon as possible in order to get the best classes for your child's needs. You will need to schedule an appointment with a counselor. I will be happy to copy test scores and the report card.  Please let me know if I can help.

Finally, at the end of this week our varsity boys will compete at the Lutheran National Tournament in Indiana. Please pray for their safety and success on and off the court. We are very proud of these young men and are pleased to have them represent Christ Lutheran School! G0 Comets!!!

Reminder:
The Comet Chorale travel choir is singing at Limestone High School next Tuesday, March 31st,  at 7:00 p.m.  The students need to meet in the auditorium at 6:45 p.m. dressed in their choir clothes.  This counts as a double music grade for this final grading period.

Our musical is this Sunday at both services, and the children are doing a great job.  Please review their speaking parts with them at home this week.  The children should come in their costumes to church on Sunday.  They should be here by 7:30 to warm up.

We practice this Wednesday at the usual time and will finish shortly after 4:30p.m.  We also practice this Saturday from 9:00 to 10:30 a.m.  These practices are very important, and every singer needs to be here.

After the musical Sunday, Youth Choir will be over for the year.  There is a scheduling conflict for some of the singers on the April date we were scheduled to sing, so we are cancelling that.  We will schedule a picnic on a Wednesday at a later date when the weather is a bit warmer.

Thanks for sharing your talented singers with us!

Youth Choir Members,
Remember, your lines for the musical need to be memorized by this Wednesday, March 11th.  The musical is March 29th.

Wednesday, February 18, 2009 :: 595 Views :: 8th Grade

Dear Parents:

During the month of February the 8th graders have been studying the civil rights movement of the 50's and 60's.  As a wrap up we are going to present a play during the Black History celebration on Feb. 26, 2009. Everyone in the classroom has a role-either as an actor, stage hand, chorus, or prop designer. We have been working on this in class and would love to have you in attendance on that day! The black history assembly begins in the afternoon, approximately at 2:00, so please mark your calendars.

Next Wednesday, Feb. 25 is Family Day in the upper grades. Grandparents and parents may join us for church, beginning at 10:00 a.m. and then lunch immediately following the service.  A note was sent home for reservations; however if you did not see it, please just send a quick note or email to me with a reservation for lunch.

Hope to see you at school next week!

Parents:

With February fast approaching there are a few dates and details I would like to share with you.
     1. February 5, 2009- This is our Academic Fair/Spelling Bee evening. The students have been working very hard on their power points and research papers and they will be on display that evening. The 8th graders will also demonstrate their machines they made for science class in the science lab.  Attendance is required and I know they would appreciate your attendance also!
     2. February always brings the excitement of our basketball tournament! It will be held the 3rd weekend in Feb. so mark your calendars for that event.
     3. As you know the Dist. 150 high school visitation was cancelled until further notice. As soon as I get the information I will pass it on to you.  I am taking the enrollment info from the Limestone students over this week (probably by Wednesday) so please make sure you have turned it in to me.
     4. There will be an important letter in the Tuesday folder concerning the changes for our Chicago trip. Please read the letter, sign it and return with the appropriate deposit by Friday if your child is going on the trip.

Thanks for all your encouragement and support you give at home. It makes a huge difference in the success of your child at school!
God's Blessings,

Mrs. Mooney

Performance Day will take place in Music classes the first week in January beginning with Tuesday classes.  Children can prepare a hymn, praise song, or church Christmas carol to sing from memory or play a piece on their band instrument or recorder.  This will earn  25 extra credit points on their music grade for this quarter!

Parents & Students:

I hope everyone has had a restful, enjoyable Christmas vacation. On Monday, Jan. 5, you should be ready to take an AR test unless you have reached 100% of your goal. We have one week left in the grading period, NOT TWO, and grades will close on Jan. 9, which also happens to be the day of our field trip to Springfield. Everyone must be at 75% or higher to attend the trip, so if you are lagging behind, read a book carefully over the weekend and be ready on Monday to take a test. I will be in early if you want to come early to take care of that first.  Enjoy the rest of your vacation!

God's Blessings,

Mrs. Mooney

Parents & Students:

Unfortunately, due to the ice we were unable to have the Christmas party. When we return we are scheduled to have an party on Tues. Jan 6th where we can exchange gifts, eat the snacks and perhaps watch a movie instead of having math & science. Now, that's a party! We do have a field trip to Springfield later that week so I will apply the $9.00 paid for lunch and gas so the trip will cost you nothing.

Have a wonderfull Christmas! Remember in all the fun and excitement to worship the newborn King! God's blessings-Mrs. Mooney

Youth Choir Carolling Cancelled:  The Youth Choir Christmas Carolling at J C Penney's tonight, December 18th, has been cancelled.

Parents & Students:

Just a few reminders.....
      1. Civil War Stamp Album is due Thursday! This counts as a test grade. Students may turn in early Tues. or Wed. for extra credit on last history test.
      2. Keep working on research for black history research paper. Next Monday we will begin writing the rough draft.
      3. Accelerated Reader: Some students are falling behind in this area. Please encourage your child to read every night! Those who are playing basketball and cheering must budget their time very carefully. Any free time at school or home should be opportunities for reading. All boys attending the Green Park Tournament this weekend must have 60% of their AR goal in order to participate. This was announced last Wed. before Thanksgiving break; however a few did not read over the break and are still way behind. On Dec. 2,  I will begin keeping students on silent lunch and after school in order to achieve AR goals. You will be notified if your son or daugher has to remain after school. If this is a transportation problem, then I will have to find another time that is suitable for all.
    4. I will be sending home information about our Christmas party on the 19th. We have a bowling party at Town & Country Bowl-if you are interested in chaperoning, please let me know.
May God continue to bless you and your family during this very special advent season as we prepare for the birth of our Savior!
Mrs. Mooney

Remember all students in our school are participating at the Taste of CLS on Thursday, Dec. 4th, and need to be here by 6:15 p.m.  dressed in white shirts, black pants or skirts, dark socks, and school shoes.  This will be a very special Christmas program, and it will count as a double music grade for every student.  The children have been working very hard on their music.  See you there!

Just a reminder:  All 7th & 8th graders are to begin taking notes on their research paper subject. By Friday,  each student must have 10 notecards and three source cards completed. Please make sure your child has a package of note cards and has gone to the library for additional sources. This research paper is very important and worth more than 1000 points! Keeping up with deadlines is essential for success. Thanks for your help.

Parents:
We had a great 1st grading period and I pray that the success that many felt will continue even as this quarter gets very busy!
     1. We are beginning our BIG research paper on Monday, Nov. 10. Please look for the note to sign next week and a list of due dates. It is important each child keeps up with the weekly deadlines in order to receive the best score possible.
     2. The Civil War is our history and literature subject next which will include a novel entitled Silent Thunder, a Civil War stamp album project (more info to follow) and many activities.
With the beginning of basketball and cheerleading season I am stressing the importance of keeping ahead of AR goals so that no one is rushing at the last minute! Please have your child read every night possible unless it is a busy night with games and homework.
Finally, please join me in congratulating our CLS Varsity Volleyball team! They will compete in the STATE tournament this weekend in Springfield. The team enters the tournament with an undefeated season (35-0). We are blessed to have these young ladies representing our school on and off the court and pray God's blessings on our weekend. I will not be here Friday as I am leaving with the team at 7:00 a.m. but the students will have work to do and will be well-supervised.
Thanks for everything you do to support CLS and especially the support and guidance you give your child-it makes a huge difference in his/her life!

News for the month of October:

We have three weeks left in the grading period which ends on October 24. Please encourage your child to look over his/her grades to see which need more effort.
Constitution-we are winding down in our book with only one more branch to learn. By now your child should have 75-100 notecards which he/she is using to quiz each night.
My Access Writing-I have been more than pleased with the scores of the 8th grade writing! Keep up the great work. We are now moving on to another type of writing-responding to works of Literature. We will be reading some works of Poe and writing essays on his work.

The students have their Chapter 2 Science test in Mrs. Lamberti's class this Thursday, with the review session on Wednesday. They have been given a study guide which should be filled out by Wednesday.

Other News:
Please mark your calendars for the Christian Education Service on Sunday, October 26. This is counted as a school day with the students participating in both services at Christ Lutheran Church. The students need a white oxford (button down) shirt with  black pants as stated in the School Supply handout. I will send more news later.

This weekend we kick off our CLS Volleyball tournament with teams visiting from Illinois and Iowa. Our girls are currently undefeated in their season and are looking forward to competing for 1st place! Please come support the Lady Comets!

God's Blessings,

There will be an exam over ch 2 next Thursday, October 9th.  Study Hard!!!
Sunday, September 21, 2008 :: 552 Views :: 8th Grade

Parents and Students:
We are now at the mid-term of our first grading period. You will receive the mid-term grades in the Tuesday folder. Please sign and return it so that I know you are aware of your child's progress thus far. Most students are off to a great start; however I am somewhat concerned about the science and Algebra grades for a few. Several courses in the 8th grade are very difficult, requiring good listening skills and a desire to understand the material. Please instruct your child to pay close attention, take good notes, and ask questions when confused. Also, some students need to study more for quizzes and tests.

As we slowly make our way through the US Constitution, I believe we should be able to take the final exam by mid-October. Please encourage your child to continue to make flash cards and review often. This is a very large final and will require advanced studying.

If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to email or come by to speak to me before or after school. I will be happy to help you. Have a great week in the Lord!

Highlights for September:
Congratulations Varsity Volleyball Team!!
Last weekend our girls' volleyball team took 1st place at the Green Park Invitational Volleyball Tournament in St. Louis, Mo. The girls played great and were outstanding young ladies. Christ Lutheran School can be very proud of these girls on and off the court!

Now to the classroom news:
We have been studying and quizzing on the Constitution facts. Our big test should be in about one month. Please encourage your child to make flash cards and begin quizzing. There are over 100 facts to remember and now is the time to begin studying!
For this week in AR the student should be at 30% of his/her goal with 80% comprehension. Parents, you may now check your child's progress under Accelerated Reader when you go to our web site.
We will write our first persuasive paper on My Access this Friday. If you do not have the internet at home please arrange for your child to either use our lab after school or another acceptable subsitute such as the public library. They do not need a printer just a computer with the internet.  You may also check your child's progress on line next weekend.
Finally, if your child did not turn in the fall fundraiser form, he/she may return it this week. Thanks for your continued support for the many programs we have at CLS.   Have a great week. Please contact me if you have any questions.
