Student introduction letter
July 1, 2011
Hello, my name is Mr. Teske. I will be your 5th grade teacher. We will be learning a variety of things this year. In math we will start with place value, and then work on multiplication, division, fractions, and then decimals. In reading we will read the stories from our book as well as other AR books. In language we will learn about nouns, verbs, sentences, paragraphs, and the proper way to use them. We will have spelling and memory work each week. In religion and daily devotions, we will study God’s Word, so it is important that you have your Bible at school each day. In social studies we will study American history, and in science we will study plants, animals, matter, and the human body.
It is hard to believe we are ready to start another school year. It was a busy summer for me because I ran our summer basketball tournament, and was preparing for this school year. I look forward to seeing you on registration day. (Monday, August 22) The times are from 7:30-930 a.m. OR 4:00 to 6:00 p.m.. Please bring all of your school supplies on registration day.
God’s Blessings,
Mr. Teske
Memory to be tested Wed. Aug. 31 (The 1st verse of the 1st grading period)
1st Commandment: You shall have no other gods. What does this mean? We should fear, love, and trust in God above all things.
Special notes about school supplies: Please have a hand held pencil sharpener! NO BATTERY POWERED SHARPENERS!!!) Make sure you have gym shoes.
The Accelerated Reader Point goal for the 1st grading period will be sent in an upcoming mailing for all 5th grade students. REMEMBER that you must make your goal as well as have above 80% accuracy on tests in order to be eligible to go on the extra field trip at the end of the year. You should have between 85-92% on tests. Accelerated Reader is part of the reading grade and appears as a separate grade on the midterms and possibly on the report cards. Accelerated Reader counts for athletic eligibility and classroom privileges. An eligibility chart will be sent to your parents. There is also an AR eligibility chart under the 5th grade tab on the school website.

8th Commandment: You shall not give false testimony against your neighbor. What does this mean? We should fear and love God so that do not tell lies about our neighbor, betray him, slander him, or hurt his reputation, but defend him, speak well of him, and explain everything in the kindest way.
Memory to be tested Wed. Nov. 2 (The 1st verse of the 2nd grading period)
9th Commandment: You shall not covet your neighbor’s house. What does this mean? We should fear and love God so that we do not scheme to get our neighbor’s inheritance or house, or get it in a way which only appears right, but help and be of service to him in keeping it.

10th Commandment: You shall not covet your neighbor’s wife, or his manservant or maidservant, his ox or donkey, or anything that belongs to your neighbor. What does this mean? We should fear and love God so that we do not entice or force away our neighbor’s wife, workers, or animals, or turn them against him, but urge them to stay and do their duty.
Memory to be tested Wed. Nov. 16
Close of Commandments: What does God say about all these commandments? He says: “I, the Lord your God am a jealous God, punishing the children for the sin of the fathers to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me, but showing love to a thousand generations who love me and keep my commandments.” Exodus 20:5-6
Memory to be tested Wed. Nov. 23
Close of Commandments Meaning: What does this mean? God threatens to punish all who break these commandments. Therefore we should fear His wrath and not do anything against them. But he promises grace and every blessing to all who keep these commandments. Therefore, we should also love and trust in Him and gladly do what he commands.
Memory to be tested Wed. Nov. 30
I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me John 14:6. The law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. John 1:17
Memory to be tested Wed. Dec. 7
The 1st article and first part of the meaning: I believe in God, the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth. What does this mean? I believe that God has made me and all creatures; that he has given me my body and soul, eyes, ears, and all my members, my reason and my senses, and still takes care of them.
Memory to be tested Wed. Dec. 14 (The last verse of the 2nd grading period)
No memory January 4
The remainder of the meaning from the1st article: He also gives me clothing and shoes, food and drink, house and home, wife and children, land animals and all I have. He richly and daily provides me with all that I need to support this body and life. He defends me against danger and guards and protects me from all evil. All this he does out of fatherly, divine goodness and mercy, without any merit or worthiness in me. For all this is my duty to thank and praise, serve and obey Him. This is most certainly true.
No Memory January 4
Memory to be tested Wed. Jan 11 (The 1st verse of the 3rd grading period)
The 2nd article: I believe in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God, the Father Almighty. From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead.
Memory to be tested Wed. Jan 18
The 2nd article meaning: What does this mean? I believe that Jesus Christ, true God, begotten of the Father from eternity, and also true man, born of the Virgin Mary, is my Lord, who has redeemed me, a lost and condemned person, purchased and won me from all sins, from death, and from the power of the devil; not with gold or silver, but with His holy, precious blood and with His innocent suffering and death, that I may be His own and live under Him in everlasting righteousness, innocence, and blessedness, just as He is risen from the dead, lives and reigns to all eternity. This is most certainly true.
Memory to be tested Wed. Jan 25
The 3rd article first part of meaning: I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. What does this mean? I believe that I cannot by my own reason or strength believe in Jesus Christ, my Lord or come to Him; but the Holy Spirit has called me by the Gospel, enlightened me with His gifts, sanctified and kept me in the true faith.
Memory to be tested Wed. Feb. 1
The 2nd part of the 3rd article meaning: What does this mean In the same way He calls, gathers, enlightens, and sanctifies the whole Christian church on earth, and keeps it with Jesus Christ in the one true faith. In this Christian church He daily and richly forgives all my sins and the sins of all believers. On the Last Day He will raise me and all the dead, and give eternal life to me and all believers in Christ. This is most certainly true.
Memory to be tested Wed. Feb. 8
Introduction to the Lord’s Prayer: Our Father who art in heaven. What does this mean? With these words God tenderly invites us to believe that He is our true Father and that we are His true children, so that with all boldness and confidence we may ask Him as dear children ask their dear father.
Memory to be tested Wed. Feb. 15 (No Memory Feb. 22)
1st Petition: Hallowed be thy name. What does this mean? God’s name is certainly holy in itself, but we pray in this petition that it may be kept holy among us also. How God’s name is kept holy? God’s name is kept holy when the Word of God is taught in its truth and purity, and we, as the children of God, also lead holy lives according to it. Help us to do this, dear Father in heaven! But anyone who teaches or lives contrary to God’s Word profanes the name of God among us. Protect us from this, heavenly Father!
Memory to be tested Wed. Feb. 29 (No Memory Feb. 22)
2nd Petition: Thy Kingdom Come. What does this mean? The kingdom of God certainly comes by itself without prayer, but we pray in this petition that it may come to us also. How does God’s kingdom come? God’s kingdom comes when our heavenly Father gives us His Holy Spirit, so that by His grace we believe His holy Word and lead godly lives here in time and there in eternity.
Memory to be tested on Wed. March 7
For it is by grace you have been saved through faith, and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God, not by works, so that no one can boast. For we are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works which God prepared in advance for us to do. Ephesians 2:8-10
Memory to be tested Wed. March.14 (The last verse of the 3rd grading period)
3rd Petition: Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. What does this mean? The good and gracious will of God is done even without our prayer, but we pray in this petition that it may be done among us also. How is God’s will done? God’s will is done when He breaks and hinders every evil plan and purpose of the devil, the world, and our sinful nature, which do not want us to hallow God’s name or let His kingdom come.
Memory to be tested Wed. March.21 (The 1st verse of the 4th grading period)
4th Petition: Give us today our daily bread.. What does this mean? God certainly gives daily bread to everyone without our prayers, even to all evil people, but we pray in this petition that God would lead us to realize this and to receive our daily bread with thanksgiving.
Memory to be tested Wed. March 28
What is meant by daily bread? Daily bread includes everything that has to do with the support and needs of the body, such as food, drink, clothing, shoes, house, home, land, animals, money, goods, a devout husband or wife, devout and faithful rulers, good government, good weather, peace, health, self control, good reputation, good friends, faithful neighbors, and the like.
Memory to be tested Wed. April 4 (No Memory April 11 or April 18)
5th Petition Forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. What does this mean? We pray in this petition that our Father in heaven would not look at our sins or deny our prayer because of them. We are neither worthy of the things for which we pray, nor have we deserved them, but we ask that He would give them all to us by grace, for we daily sin much and surely deserve nothing but punishment. So we too will sincerely forgive and gladly do good to those who sin against us.
Memory to be tested Wed. April 25 (No Memory April 11 or April 18)
6th Petition: And lead us not into temptation. What does this mean? God tempts no one. We pray in this petition that God would guard and keep us so the devil, the world, and our sinful nature may not deceive us or mislead us into false belief, despair, and other great shame and vice. Although we are attacked by these things, we pray that we may finally overcome them and win the victory.
Memory to be tested Wed. May 2
7th Petition: But deliver us from evil. What does this mean? We pray in this petition, in summary that our Father in heaven would rescue us from every evil of body and soul, possessions and reputation, and finally, when our last hour comes, give us a blessed end, and graciously take us from this valley of sorrow to Himself in heaven.
Memory to be tested Wed. May 9 (The last verse of the 4th grading period)
Conclusion: For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever Amen. What does this mean? This means that I should be certain that these petitions are pleasing to our Father in heaven, and are heard by Him; for He Himself has commanded us to pray in this way and has promised to hear us. Amen, amen, which means “yes, yes, it shall be so.”
